UNITED STATES (VOP TODAY NEWS) — Unidentified gunmen killed a police officer and kidnapped two Cuban doctors in the northeastern city of Mandira, Kenya’s KTN News and the Daily Nation reported on Friday.
The attackers took the two doctors away after the officer was shot, the newspaper said.
KTN reported that police suspected the two doctors and their kidnappers, believed to be members of al-Qaeda-linked al-Shabaab, had traveled to Somalia.
In the past, Mandera has been the scene of repeated attacks in which scores of civilians and security personnel were killed.
Al-Shabaab claimed responsibility for most of these attacks.
Al Shabaab is fighting to overthrow Somalia’s central government and establish its own rule based on its strict interpretation of Islamic law.
It is also carrying out repeated attacks in Kenya, mostly in the area bordering Somalia, to pressure the Kenyan government to withdraw its troops from Somalia.
