Philippine president declares Marawi City totally liberated from militants

Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte on Monday declared Marawi City liberated from pro-Islamic State militants who have held the heart of the city for 148 days, reported Reuters citing the media and a government minister as saying.

According to Dutterte, the government has completely restored control over the city. “Thus, I announce the release of Maravi,” the television channel quotes the President of the Philippines.

Earlier, the head of the Ministry of Defense of the Philippines Delfin Lorenzana announced the liquidation of several militant leaders who were active in the city.
