UNITED STATES (VOP TODAY NEWS) — Ankara will face a worsening of its military relations with the United States in the case of the purchase of Russian S-400 ground-to-air missile systems, the Pentagon has threatened. Meanwhile, Erdogan announced that the transaction on the S-400 was over.
Pentagon spokesman Charles Summers said that if Turkey buys Russian S-400 ground-to-air missile systems, it should expect “serious consequences,” The Hill reports.
According to the spokesman, Ankara will face a serious aggravation of its military relations with the United States.
“If Turkey buys the S-400s, it will not have the F-35 fighter and the Patriot ground-to-air missile systems,” said the head of the US Department of Defense .
The contract for the delivery of the Russian S-400 to Turkey, concluded in 2017, became the reason for diplomatic tensions between Ankara and Washington, which demanded that its Turkish ally renounce the Russian S-400 for the benefit of the American Patriot.
Ankara took a firm stance in this area by not giving up the S-400, even though it was buying the American Patriot in parallel. The Turkish authorities considered that there was no connection between the two.
This week, Recep Tayyip Erdogan pointed out that the transaction on the S-400 was over and that there was no question of backing down. Moreover, the Turkish head of state also admitted the possibility of buying Russian S-500 ground-to-air missile systems.
End of 2017, Ankara signed with Moscow a contract estimated at 2.5 billion dollars (2.1 billion euros) for the delivery of S-400, scheduled for July 2019. Recently, the Turkish Minister of Defense Hulusi Akar announced that Turkey would begin deploying the S-400 on its territory in October 2019.
