UNITED STATES, WASHINGTON (VOP TODAY NEWS) — A major fire broke out on Monday at an arms store run by an armed Iraqi faction, causing explosions heard across parts of Baghdad, killing one person and wounding 29, authorities said.
The warehouse, run by an armed faction under the leadership of the Iranian-backed Popular Mobilization Forces, is inside a federal police headquarters in the southern suburbs of Baghdad.
A security source told Reuters short-range rockets and Katyusha rockets were in the warehouse.
Qassem al-Atabi, a spokesman for the district’s health directorate, said the fire had fired some rockets that landed in neighborhoods kilometers away and wounded 14 people, mostly children.
Health Ministry spokesman Saif Badr said most of the wounded had been discharged from hospitals in the area where they sustained minor injuries.
A police source pointed out that the fire may have occurred due to negligence, which led to poor storage conditions and high temperatures. The Interior Ministry has ordered an investigation.
