Police found at least 33 human skulls buried in the west of the country, the latest discovery of its kind in an area plagued by rising violence among drug cartels, police said.
“So far we have found 33 skulls,” said a government official in the state of Nayarit, who asked not to be named. All discovered in the same area.”
He said it was not yet clear who the skulls were or why they were buried in three graves close to the surface of the earth.
He said investigations were being conducted at the site in the southern state of Nayarit since Saturday and other human remains were likely to be found.
Nayaret is one of the states that is experiencing a dramatic increase in murder related to criminal activities, prompting killings to record levels in Mexico in 2017.
The US Attorney General was arrested by the US authorities in San Diego last year on charges of drug trafficking.
