UNITED STATES (VOP TODAY NEWS) — Pyongyang has asked UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to intervene in the illegal seizure of one of its merchant ships by North Korea, state media said on Wednesday.
“This act of expropriation clearly indicates that the United States is indeed a guerrilla country, which does not care at all about international laws,” the North Korean ambassador to the United Nations said in a letter to Guterres on Friday,” he said.
Korea also asked Guterres to take urgent action, saying that Washington had violated North Korea’s sovereignty and violated UN charters.
Pyongyang said the confiscation of the ship was a violation of the spirit of the summit (held by the Korean leader and the US president) and demanded that it be returned without delay.
Pyongyang’s protest comes amid rising tensions since the second summit in Hanoi between North Korean leader Kim Jong-un and US President Donald Trump, which was aimed at disarming North Korea.
