UNITED STATES (VOP TODAY NEWS) — In Stockholm, awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine. It was received by James Allison (James P. Allison) and Tasuku Hono (Tasuku Honjo), who offered to use immunotherapy for cancer treatment. This method is fundamentally different from all other therapeutic approaches used in oncology.

Scientists were able to detect “checkpoints”, so-called “checkpoint”, the inhibition of which allows the immune cells of the body to recognize tumor cells and destroy them. Allison is a professor at the University of Texas Anderson Cancer Center (University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center) who studied CTLA-4 protein.

Honyou, who works at Kyoto University, discovered and studied another protein, the PD-1 receptor located on the surface of lymphocytes. The authors showed that the suppression of the work of CTLA-4 and PD-1, can again restore the ability of the immune system to fight the tumor.

The work of immunologists became the basis for further research: there have already appeared drugs based on antibodies, using which you can achieve activation of the immune system and reduce the work of tumors.

Immunotherapy drugs are already used in the clinic – they are prescribed for the treatment of lung cancer, kidney cancer, melanoma and lymphoma. Not so long ago, it was shown that the combination of two targeted drugs is even more effective.

The presentation of the Nobel Prize to immunologists in 2018 was a truly important event – the prize was given to scientists whose contribution to medicine is really important, and the drugs developed on the basis of their discoveries are already used in the clinic to save the lives of cancer patients.
