UNITED STATES (VOP TODAY NEWS) — About 20 years ago, the scientific community was agitated by the results published in the article by Andrew Wakefield. They suggested that a vaccine that protects against measles, mumps and rubella can trigger autism.
Despite the fact that the article was subsequently withdrawn, and none of the scientists later managed to repeat the results, the myth about the relationship between vaccination and autism became very popular. He is remembered to this day: many parents refuse to vaccinate children for fear of autism spectrum disorders.
Recently, the results of perhaps the largest study were published, during which the link between vaccination and autism was refuted. Scientists analyzed data on 657,461 children who were born between 1999 and 2010. Of these, only 6517 were diagnosed with autism.
Researchers from Denmark who watched every child from the age of one until August 2013. There were no differences in the incidence of autism between those who were vaccinated and those who did not receive vaccinations.
Autism is now believed to be a multifactorial disease, in the development of which both genetic and environmental factors can be guilty. The measles vaccine can be excluded from this list, the authors assert.
Currently, the incidence of measles has increased worldwide. So, for the first three months of 2019, the same number of measles cases were registered in the United States, how many were diagnosed for the entire 2017. In some countries, the disease was completely eliminated in previous years, but foreign tourists brought the disease.
