An internal attack on police in the southern province of Helmand killed nine policemen on Thursday, a local official said.

“A man in police uniform believed to belong to an armed group fired at police at a checkpoint outside the city of Lashar Jah, capital of Helmand province, early this morning, killing nine people,” the official said on condition of anonymity.

A spokesman for Helmand province’s governor Omar Zawak confirmed the incident without providing information on the casualties, saying an investigation had been launched.

The province of Helmand, famous for poppy cultivation, has become the scene of insurgent insurgency by the Taliban over the past decade.
