New protests broke out in the Iranian capital Tehran on Monday evening, January 1, in the fifth day of demonstrations in the country.

According to Agence France-Presse, the local media have reported pictures of burning cars with a number of police.

The agency said relatively small groups were shouting anti-regime slogans in the city center.

Iranian television announced the high death toll of demonstrations against economic conditions, on Monday, in Iran 12 people.

The Associated Press quoted Iranian television as saying that 12 people had been killed amid protests throughout the country since the demonstrations began on Thursday, noting that Iranian television did not give any circumstances about the nature of the dead.
