Negotiations between the DPRK and South Korea began

The first round of dialogue on the normalization of relations between the Republic of Korea and the DPRK began on Tuesday morning at the border point of Panmunjom.

This was announced by the Ministry of Association of the Republic of Korea.

It is reported that the main topic of the first inter-Korean negotiations since December 2015 will be practical steps to improve relations between Seoul and Pyongyang, in particular, the possible participation of North Korean athletes in the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang.

The delegations of the two countries include five members each. The delegation of the Republic of Korea is headed by the Minister of the Unification Cho Myung-gyeong, the DPRK is the Chairman of the Korean Peaceful Reunification Committee Ri Song Gwon.

The leader of the DPRK, Kim Jong Un, in his New Year’s address, announced the readiness of the authorities of the country to send their athletes to the Winter Olympic Games in South Korean Pyeongchang.

In response, South Korean President Mun Zhe Ying instructed his government to begin preparations for talks with the DPRK on its possible participation in the upcoming Olympics.

Last Sunday, Kim Jong-un applied to the nation to create all the necessary conditions for improving relations with the Republic of Korea. “The Head of State made clear that our country needs to strongly adhere to the policy, which would allow to make a breakthrough in the unification,” stated in the material agency KCNA. “Do not bring up the past and to think about [the specifics of the relationship] with Seoul Instead, the need to improve communication. between the North and the South.”
