Moscow: No alternative to a political solution to the crisis in India and Pakistan

UNITED STATES, WASHINGTON (VOP TODAY NEWS) — Russia sees no alternative to a political solution to the standoff between India and Pakistan, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Wednesday.

This came during a telephone conversation between Lavrov and his Pakistani counterpart Shah Mehmood Qureshi, Russia Today reported, without disclosing who made the call.

The Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement: “During the contact was discussed the situation in South Asia, amid the deterioration of relations between Pakistan and India after the decision taken by New Delhi to change the legal status of Jammu and Kashmir,” the same source.

The statement added: “The Russian side stresses the need to ease tension, and that there is no alternative to resolve the differences between Pakistan and India, but political and diplomatic means.”

Last week, the New Delhi-controlled part of the province saw widespread protests against the Indian government, after which the authorities ordered citizens to remain at home.

This followed the abolition of the Indian government on August 5, two articles of the Constitution, one of which gives the autonomy of the state of “Jammu and Kashmir” part of the territory under its control from the region.

The other gives Kashmiris alone in the state the right to permanent residence as well as the right to employment in government departments and property and to receive educational grants.

The following day, the upper and lower chambers of the Indian Parliament approved the decision to divide Jammu and Kashmir into two regions (Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh), which report directly to the central government.

But the resolution still needs to be passed by the country’s president to become law.
