UNITED STATES (VOP TODAY NEWS) — Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov said on Tuesday that Russia is concerned about the US presence in the eastern Euphrates and that this could be a hindrance to the preservation of Syrian territorial integrity.

“I want to stress that we remain concerned about the US presence in the eastern Euphrates,” Ryabkov said after an interview between Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and his US counterpart Mike Pompeo.

Ryabkov said Russia views the US presence east of the Euphrates as “a deliberate approach to obstructing the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Syria.”

“We certainly think that the Kurdish factor is necessary from the point of view of the general evolution of the situation and the prospects for a settlement. We are against the abuse of this factor by some of our colleagues and partners,” he added.

Russia, with its main partners in Astana (Turkey and Iran) and with the UN Special Envoy to Syria, is working to form a joint constitutional committee between the Syrian parties; this committee will be responsible for delivering a constitutional reform project in Syria. In September 2018, the representatives of the three states agreed on the lists of participants of the Syrian government and the opposition.

During Pompeo’s visit to Russia, the latter and Putin discussed the need for the preservation of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Syria, the official Russian news agency TASS quoted high-ranking Russian diplomats as saying on Tuesday.
