More than 80 migrants rescued off the Libyan coast

UNITED STATES, WASHINGTON (VOP TODAY NEWS) — The humanitarian vessel Ocean Viking rescued more than 80 migrants, most of them Sudanese, on Saturday morning in an initial toll from MSF and sent to AFP.

It was the second rescue in 24 hours by Ocean Viking, an affiliate of SOS Med and Medecins Sans Frontieres, carrying an AFP journalist. On Friday, the ship rescued 85 people, including five women and four children.

The rubber boat was discovered thanks to an aircraft carrying frequent flights, said MSF mission chief Jay Burger.

But he explained that “the plane never sought to communicate with us.” But by heading north, Ocean Viking saved the boat.

European forces routinely fly over the central Mediterranean to monitor boats leaving Libyan shores, during which time they benefit from favorable weather conditions.

About 170 people, all from sub-Saharan Africa, are currently on board the humanitarian ship that left Marseille on Sunday.

Italian Interior Minister Matteo Salvini, who toppled the government coalition on Thursday and is preparing for a possible early autumn election, was quick to report to the Norwegian government, which is flying its flag.

“Italy is not legally obliged and unwilling to receive unidentified illegal immigrants aboard Ocean Viking,” he wrote.

Oslo did not immediately respond, but Norwegian Minister of Justice and Immigration Jorn Kalmer (right-wing populist) said in a televised speech that “migrants” should be returned to Africa, Tunisia or Libya.
