More than 400 thousand displaced people in three months due to continuous bombardment of northwest Syria

UNITED STATES, WASHINGTON (VOP TODAY NEWS) — More than 400,000 people have been displaced in three months of escalation in northwestern Syria, according to a statement released by the United Nations on Friday.

A statement by the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Assistance that the displaced leave, especially south of Idlib and northern Hama province. They generally travel to areas not hit by shelling north, sometimes reaching areas close to the border with neighboring Turkey, including camps for the displaced. The regime forces are bombing the area because they are under the control of jihadist factions.

It controls Idlib, which is outside the regime, the Sham Liberation Organization (the former Syrian branch of al-Qaeda), and other opposition factions.

With the support of Russian aviation, the Syrian regime has been bombing almost every day since the end of April and other areas in the provinces of Aleppo, Hama and neighboring Lattakia.

“More than 400,000 people have been displaced since the end of April,” said David Swanson of the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).

“Displaced camps are overcrowded and many are forced to stay in the open air,” the statement said, adding that “about two-thirds of the displaced people are outside the camps.”

“In Idlib alone, about 100 schools are currently being displaced,” he said. He said that “the majority of those fleeing flee out of Idlib province while a few went to the north of Aleppo province.” The statement stressed that “cities and entire villages seemed to have disappeared from their inhabitants who fled in search of safety and basic services.”

Syria has been plagued by a bloody conflict since its outbreak in 2011 that killed more than 370,000 people and caused massive damage to infrastructure and displaced more than half of the population inside and outside the country.
