UNITED STATES (VOP TODAY NEWS) — Britain will ask for a postponement of the pullout ahead of a planned European Union summit in a few days and expects the bloc to reach a decision on the issue at the meeting, the country’s state secretary said on Monday.
The British parliament voted last week in favor of the need for the government to seek an extension of the timeframe for exit negotiations under Article 50, delaying the withdrawal beyond the March 29 deadline.
“We will consider applying for any extension before the European Council (EC) meeting scheduled for March,” Corton told parliament. The Government expects that the European Council will decide whether to approve this request, which is being made by the United Kingdom, during this meeting.”
“Once this is agreed at the level of the European Union, we will introduce the domestic legislation necessary to amend the definition of the date of exit (of the Union),” he said, pointing to the need to pass this legislation from the Parliament of both upper and lower.
