Macron encourages G7 countries to discuss fires in Amazon

UNITED STATES, WASHINGTON (VOP TODAY NEWS) — French President Emmanuel Macron expressed concern over the fires in the Amazon and called on the G-7 countries to discuss this issue during the upcoming Biarritz summit.

“Our house is on fire. Literally. Amazonia – the lung of our planet – which produces 20% oxygen, burns. This is an international crisis. G7 members will meet in two days to talk about this emergency,” Macron wrote on his Twitter page.

The strongest fires in the forests of the Amazon last three weeks. According to a satellite analysis of the National Space Research Institute (INPE) of Brazil, the area of forest fires in the Amazon is 82% greater than the area covered by fire over the past year.

The G7 Summit will be held in French Biarritz July 24-26.
