UNITED STATES (VOP TODAY NEWS) — French President Emmanuel Macron will meet next week in Paris with Marshal Khalifa Haftar, the powerful man in eastern Libya who is waging a military offensive against Tripoli, the seat of the opposition National Accord government, the Elysee Palace said Thursday.
“The meeting is aimed at discussing the situation in Libya and the conditions for the resumption of political dialogue following the visit of Prime Minister (al-Libi Fayez al-Sarraj) and in cooperation with the United Nations and our partners,” the French presidency said in a statement.
Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte, who is currently on a visit to Rome, was met Thursday by reporters in Rome.
French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Lauderian announced Tuesday that Macron intends to meet Haftar.
“The situation in Libya is very worrying because the UN roadmap, which almost reached its happy conclusion in Abu Dhabi (the end of February), was thwarted because of a step taken by Marshal Haftar, because of a step, or rather, the absence of a step,” he told the National Assembly. By Prime Minister Fayez Al-Sarraj.”
Macron was met on May 8 in Paris after he accused Paris of supporting his rival Hafer.
More than a month after the start of the Haftar attack to control Tripoli, his forces were unable to advance to the capital and the situation in Libya reached a dead end.
The European Union condemned on Monday the offensive by the military forces of Marshal Haftar and considered it a threat to international security and called for an immediate ceasefire in Libya.
