UNITED STATES (VOP TODAY NEWS) — Large numbers of Islamic state fighters and their families surrendered on Tuesday in a battle in which US-backed forces are on hold in control of the last enclave of the Islamist group in eastern Syria, the Syrian Democratic forces said.
“The fighters have surrendered collectively,” Mustafa Bali, a media officer of the Syrian Democratic Forces, told Reuters.
“Large numbers have surrendered collectively. Until our forces make sure that everyone who wants to surrender and end the process of surrender, the clashes will resume. Hostile families and fighters surrendered to Syria’s democratic forces. Syria’s democratic forces want to be sure.”
He added that the final defeat of the militants in the Baguoz is very close.
A Reuters witness saw hundreds of people surrender to Syria’s democratic forces.
