UNITED STATES (VOP TODAY NEWS) — The head of the European Commission (EC), Jean-Claude Juncker, and British Prime Minister Theresa May, following a meeting in Sharm el-Sheikh, agreed on the need to reach an agreement on leaving the kingdom from the community before the EU summit on March 21-22, announced on Monday at a press conference in Brussels by a representative of the EC Mina Andreeva.
“They agreed that it was necessary to complete this work before the EU summit in March,” she said.
According to her, May and Junker noted the progress that the parties have made on the situation around the Brexit deal. “Today, the EU’s main negotiator, Michelle Barnier, will host Premier May’s team in Brussels to continue working,” she added.
European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker, following consultations with May, limited himself to saying that they “had a good constructive” meeting. The Prime Minister of the Netherlands Mark Rutte spoke more pessimistically, according to which, “Brussels and London are somnambulistically wandering to the exit without an agreement.”
If London and Brussels are not able to agree on the conditions of the process, having achieved the approval of the transaction by the British Parliament, then Brexit is not possible without a deal.
A similar development of the situation involves the simultaneous termination of membership in the EU customs union and the single European market and the introduction of duties on British goods sold on the European market.
In the short term, Brexit, without a deal, can impede transport links between the UK and the continent, lead to a shortage of certain categories of goods, and create barriers to trade between the United Kingdom and the EU countries.
