Johnson and Bolton discuss the Iranian file during a meeting in London

UNITED STATES, WASHINGTON (VOP TODAY NEWS) — British Prime Minister Boris Johnson will discuss Iran on Monday afternoon with White House national security adviser John Bolton, a government spokesman said.

Johnson and Bolton will discuss “security issues, including Iran,” the spokesman said.

Bolton is the highest-ranking administration official to visit the United Kingdom since Johnson took over as prime minister on July 24.

“I will discuss a series of national security and economic issues with officials in London,” Bolton wrote on Saturday before heading to the British capital.

According to US and British media, Bolton is also scheduled to meet Monday and Tuesday with other British government officials, particularly Finance Minister Sajid Javed and Brexit Minister Stephen Barclay.

The US embassy in London did not confirm the meetings when asked by AFP.

The British Government announced on 5 August that it would participate in a “maritime security mission” alongside the United States to protect merchant ships in the Strait of Hormuz in the Gulf.

The region has been in heightened tension since the United States withdrew from the nuclear deal with Iran in 2018 and imposed tough sanctions on Tehran.

London stressed that its rapprochement with the United States in this dossier does not change its position on the protection of the nuclear agreement, which limits Iran’s nuclear activities like the other European state.

On the other hand, the UK hopes to sign a trade agreement with Washington after leaving the European Union.

US President Donald Trump, who has long criticized the Theresa May administration for Brexit, expressed support for Boris Johnson and confirmed in late July that the two countries had already started trade talks.

After meeting with British Foreign Secretary Dominique Rapp in Washington, US Vice President Mike Pence announced Friday that he would travel to London “in early September to reaffirm the distinguished, lasting and solid relationship” between the two countries.
