UNITED STATES (VOP TODAY NEWS) — The Japanese defense ministry plans to develop a 400-km winged missile that will be the first of its kind in the country’s history to be supplied by its military air fleet.
Japan had developed in 2017 a 3-speed ASM3 3-speed AS-3 air-to-surface missile with a speed of about 200 km. But Japan’s defense later abandoned the idea of supplying the missile to the military, considering it to be ineffective in the circumstances of China’s growing defense capabilities.
Japanese military officials now plan to design a new missile with improved speed and range specifications based on ASM3, Japanese media quoted government sources as saying.
It is expected that funding will be allocated to achieve the plan and to include it in the 2020 budget.
According to media reports in late 2018, Japan will allocate a record $ 47 billion in its military budget for 2019, while the total state budget for this year is $ 912 billion.
Japan has increased its military spending to raise its readiness for a supposed confrontation with China and Russia by strengthening its missile defense system and deploying stealth aircraft.
