UNITED STATES (VOP TODAY NEWS) – Italian Foreign Minister Enzo Moavero Milanesi ruled out the possibility of changing the draft state budget approved by the government for 2019, which the European Commission rejected on Tuesday.

“The EC plays its role as an overseer for the implementation of European norms. But I have to tell you that European rules leave the last sovereign word on the budget for national parliaments,” the Foreign Minister said in a joint meeting on Tuesday evening Affairs and on the European politics of both houses of the Italian Parliament.

According to Milanezi, “at present, the government excludes the possibility of” making any changes to the approved draft law on the state budget for 2019 and does not intend to prepare a new document instead.

Earlier on Tuesday, the EC rejected the draft state budget of Italy for 2019. At the same time, the Deputy Chairman of the EC Valdis Dombrovskis said that Rome has three weeks to prepare a new document. “We see no alternative but to ask the Italian government to revise the draft budget for 2019, and we hope for an open and constructive dialogue,” he said.

In turn, the Commissioner for Finance Pierre Moscovici indicated that the draft state budget approved by the current government of Italy on October 15 was not in line with the obligations that had been assumed by the previous cabinet last July.
