UNITED STATES (VOP TODAY NEWS) — Israeli forces killed two Palestinians on Friday and wounded 55 others as they took part in weekly protests on the Gaza-Israel border, the Palestinian Health Ministry said.
Medical officials said the men, aged 29 and 18, were killed by Israeli gunfire in two locations in central Gaza.
The Israeli army said its forces faced about 9,500 demonstrators, some of whom threw stones at the troops and threw the tires on fire. An army spokeswoman said the troops had responded “by riot means” and fired in accordance with established procedures.
Medical officials in Gaza said about 200 people had been killed since Palestinians began weekly protests on the border on March 30 last year.
Protesters demand the right to return to the territories from which their parents fled or were forced to flee during Israel’s 1948 creation.
Another 30 Palestinians were killed in Gaza in other incidents during the same period, including during cross-border exchanges of fire. An Israeli soldier was killed by a Palestinian sniper at the border and another was killed during a failed raid in Gaza.
