Israeli authorities demolish a residential house in East Jerusalem

UNITED STATES, WASHINGTON (VOP TODAY NEWS) — Israeli municipality on Wednesday demolished a Palestinian house in occupied East Jerusalem for illegal construction.

Eyewitnesses told Anatolia that Israeli police forces surrounded the house of “Nabil Rajabi”, in the town of Beit Hanina, north of Jerusalem, before being demolished by an Israeli bulldozer.

A family of six lived in the house that had been built for years and the Israeli municipality says it was built without a permit.

The Israeli authorities halted the demolition for about two hours, after the Palestinian family obtained a decision to stop the demolition.

According to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), Israeli authorities have demolished 126 homes in East Jerusalem since the beginning of this year until the end of July.

According to the same UN office, the Israeli authorities demolished 177 homes in East Jerusalem during the past year 2018 due to unauthorized construction.

According to Palestinian, Israeli and international human rights organizations, the Israeli municipality in Jerusalem deliberately curbs building permits for Palestinians in East Jerusalem to reduce the number of Palestinians there.

In contrast, Palestinian, Israeli and international reports indicate that in recent years there has been a marked escalation in Israeli settlement construction in the city.
