Israel warns Hamas of new attacks that increase the suffering of Gazans

UNITED STATES, WASHINGTON (VOP TODAY NEWS) — The Israeli army on Thursday warned residents of the Gaza Strip and its rulers that continued attacks on Israel would lead to harsher conditions for the besieged enclave.

Army spokesman Avichai Adrai issued the warning in Arabic hours after planes bombed Hamas targets in response to rockets fired from Gaza overnight.

Hamas fired two rockets at Israel, bringing the number to six in less than a week, the Israeli army said.

The army responded to Hamas rockets, declaring in a brief statement that it “bombarded a number of Hamas military sites in naval installations in the northern Gaza Strip” but did not specify them.

There have been a series of incidents in recent weeks along the border fence separating Israel and the Gaza Strip.

Adrai stressed that some incidents were behind the “Islamic Jihad” movement, but also stressed the official view that Hamas is responsible for any attacks coming out of the Strip by virtue of its control over it.

He said that “Islamic Jihad had previously committed and plans at the present time to commit sabotage attacks, including rocket launches.”

“Israel does not and will not accept such attacks,” he said. “Hamas, as the governing authority in Gaza, must extend its influence and prevent these attacks and these plans.”

He also said that “the perpetrator of terrorist attacks will prevent the improvement of the situation and the development of the steps that have been implemented and planned to implement what will affect the population of the Strip in general.”

This tension comes ahead of the early legislative elections scheduled for September 17 in Israel.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is popular in the run-up to the election but also faces strong political pressure to respond firmly to the attacks.

Israel and the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip have fought three wars since 2008.
