UNITED STATES (VOP TODAY NEWS) — Israel cut its fishing distance off Gaza from 15 nautical miles to 10 miles, an Israeli official said Thursday, following the launch of incendiary balloons from the Palestinian sector.

For its part, a spokeswoman for the fire and rescue authority to extinguish three fires in Israel caused by burning balloons, from Gaza.

Israel has imposed a land, sea and air blockade on the territory controlled by Hamas since 2007.

Without specifying whether the Israeli decision was in response to the firing of balloons, the Israeli official, who preferred not to be identified, explained that the extent of sea fishing was reduced from Wednesday, one day after the Israeli authorities announced it would expand to 15 miles.

Sea fishing limits vary according to the level of tension. In recent years, it has been reduced to three miles.

It is the widest 15 miles Israel has allowed for years. However, it remains below the 20-mile distance agreed upon in the Oslo Accords of the 1990s.
