UNITED STATES (VOP TODAY NEWS) — US President Donald Trump said on Thursday that the “caliphate” of the Islamic State terrorist group in Syria has been completely defeated.
“We captured 100% of the caliphate. This refers to the area, territory. We did it much faster than expected,” said Trump, speaking to the military in Alaska.
The US president made a stop in Alaska on the way from Vietnam, where his summit with the DPRK leader Kim Jong-un was held on February 27-28. The speech of the head of state was broadcasted by American television channels.
Earlier, on February 22, Trump has already made a similar statement. However, on Thursday, the command of the coalition to combat the IS published a report on military operations from 10 to 23 February, from which it followed that during this period more than 180 attacks were made on terrorists in Syria, and in Iraq, where active hostilities were completed last year – 25 hits.
Trump said he intends to withdraw American troops from Syria, but it can leave a small contingent there. It was reported that the United States will be located in the north-east of Syria as a peacekeeping mission, another 200 in the “conflict prevention zone” in At-Tanf, and in the north-east they will be part of the European mission of 800 to 1.5 thousand people.
Since 2014, the United States and its allies have conducted an operation against IS in Syria and Iraq, and they operate in Syria without the consent of the country’s authorities.
