UNITED STATES (VOP TODAY NEWS) — The first shock passed, the time is in the balance sheet. The destruction of one of the Pentagon’s most sophisticated spy drones in southern Iran has prompted American military experts to review their copy from the ground up.
In its issue of July 13, The National Interest returns there recognizing the flaws of the “air reconnaissance sector” of the United States.
The newspaper writes:
Recognition. These are reconnaissance and intelligence units most often “multi-sensor” grouping in most cases, information from human and electronic sources.”
The US magazine adds: “A few days ago, the aerospace forces of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) shot down a US-made Global Hawk surveillance drone flying in Iranian airspace near Hormuz Strait The US Central Command has specified that the drone is an extended area maritime surveillance aircraft, a naval variant and a prototype of the 737-size Global Hawk. The BAMS-D, equipped with cameras and a radar, is designed to switch between high and low altitudes, alternately sweeping large areas for ships and then individually identifying them”.
For the United States, which is going through a period of intense tension with Iran, which is likely to lead to a maritime war, it is not necessarily good news. Since 2008, Northrop has built four BAMS-D and Iran has shot one. This could jeopardize plans by the US Navy to deploy the full naval version of the Global Hawk MQ-4C by the end of 2019. In any case, two of these aircraft are stationed in the United Arab Emirates. US military circles did not believe Iran was capable of intercepting a drone flying at up to 65,000 feet and out of reach of many air defense systems. Especially since BAMS-D is subsonic and devoid of stealth functions; which makes it vulnerable to the most powerful ground-to-air missiles.
Iranian forces claimed to have used the Khordad 3 surface-to-air missile to shoot down BAMS-D. CGRI also has Bavar 373 air defense systems, which they built on the S-300 model. All this promises a difficult time for the coming weeks, says the National Interest.
But this strategy takes time to become effective. In the meantime, the Iranians are likely to have many surprises for us.”
