UNITED STATES (VOP TODAY NEWS) — Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said that sending US military reinforcements to the Middle East is a “threat to international peace.”
In the wake of Donald Trump’s announcement of 1,500 additional US troops in the Middle East, Iran blasted the measure, calling it a threat, according to the official news agency Irna.
“The increased US presence in our region is very dangerous and a threat to the international peace and security that must be faced,” he said during a visit to Pakistan.
US-Iranian tensions have mounted a notch following the US decision to recognize the Islamic Revolutionary Guards (GRI) as a terrorist organization.
The Iranian Supreme National Security Council has in turn described the United States Central Command (CENTCOM) as a terrorist organization and the United States as the “sponsoring state of terrorism”.
Citing threats of “imminent” attacks by Tehran or its regional allies against US interests, Washington has stepped up military deployments, sending an aircraft carrier, B-52 bombers, a warship to the Gulf. and Patriot missiles. Donald Trump also announced Friday sending 1,500 additional troops in the Middle East in a “preventive” way.
Pentagon chief Patrick Shanahan announced Thursday (May 23rd) that the United States is considering sending more troops to the Middle East to “improve US security forces” in the region.
According to the Pentagon, this is a response “to indications of an improvement in Iranian preparations for offensive operations against US forces and our interests.” The area of deployment of these means is kept secret.
