The Pentagon unveiled on Friday a new national defense strategy, the most important points:
  • Long-term strategic rivalry with China and Russia is a key priority for the Pentagon
  • The competition of the superpowers and not terrorism is the focus of American national security
  • Russia seeks to divide NATO and change the political and security situation in Europe and the Middle East in its favor
  • Iran and North Korea threaten regional and global stability
  • The United States will continue to fight terrorism
  • The US Joint Chiefs of Staff will seek to deter aggression in three key regions – the Indian Ocean, the Pacific, the Middle East and Europe
  • The United States will develop alliances to preserve what has been achieved in Afghanistan, Iraq and Syria
  • Nuclear triple update with emphasis on missile defense
  • The United States intends to “build a more lethal force” and strengthen traditional alliances
