Huawei case: China could ban its market to US technology companies

UNITED STATES (VOP TODAY NEWS) — After Donald Trump signed a decree that indirectly banned US companies from doing business with Huawei, analysts point to a Chinese legislative initiative that could ban US companies from the Chinese market.

The Chinese Cyberspace Administration has proposed a set of cybersecurity measures that, in the event of adoption, will force operators of China’s critical IT infrastructure to “assess the risk to national security” when acquiring foreign products and services, reports The South China Morning Post.

According to this source, the project in question was published online for public feedback until June 24.

“China could use [these measures, note] to block US technology purchases based on national security,” said Samm Sacks, a researcher on cybersecurity policy and the Chinese digital economy at New America, a think-tank.

The document does not specify in detail what could be considered a “security risk”, giving only a few general examples such as “leakage, loss and cross-border transfer of key data” and “threat to the security of the security chain”, says The South China Morning Post.

“Regulatory opacity means that managers have a lot of flexibility in how they want to implement it – which means it could be applied to US companies and fit into” qualitative measures “as part of the Chinese response in the trade war, “said Nick Marro, an analyst at The Economist Intelligence Unit.

This initiative comes as relations between China and the United States have entered a new spiral of tension and technology is a major axis of their arm wrestling.

Donald Trump signed Wednesday, May 15 a decree banning US companies to use equipment made by telecommunications companies risk to national security, which is to prohibit US companies from doing business with Huawei.

Reuters reported on May 19 that Google, a subsidiary of Alphabet, would no longer provide software, hardware and technical services to Huawei except for open source services.
