The head of the Catalan Government Carlos Puicdemont called the actions of the Spanish authorities against Catalonia an attack on democracy. Speaking on Saturday evening with a special appeal on television, Puichdem also said that “these events open the door to abuse elsewhere.”
According to him, Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy “annuls in the offices everything that the Catalans decided in the election,” reported RIA Novosti.
At an emergency meeting on Saturday morning, the Council of Ministers of Spain considered the possibility of applying Article 155 of the Constitution , through which the central authorities can suspend the autonomous status of Catalonia.
This decision must be finally approved by the Senate of the Spanish Parliament, whose meeting is scheduled for October 27.
