UNITED STATES (VOP TODAY NEWS) — Germany on Wednesday extended the suspension of arms sales to Saudi Arabia, which Paris and London criticized, until the end of March but opened the door to soften the situation later.
Berlin decided in the autumn to stop arms exports to Saudi Arabia following the killing of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi in his consulate in Istanbul. She explained that the suspension will be applied until the ninth of March.
But the German government decided to extend this freeze until the end of March.
“We have made this decision because of the developments in Yemen, we believe it is necessary to end the war in Yemen as soon as possible,” German Foreign Minister Haikou Mas said Wednesday.
However, there may be a softening of the situation after this new period. “This month, we will be monitoring the current developments, especially on the conflict in Yemen,” he told a news conference with his Danish counterpart Anders Samuelson.
The decision taken on 3 October following Khashoggi’s death raises tension with Berlin’s main allies, notably France and Britain. Countries fear that this will affect joint industrial projects.
The government’s decision caused tension among coalition partners in Berlin. The Christian Democratic Union (conservative right) led by Chancellor Angela Merkel supports our call in the position while the Social Democratic Party (SPD) advocates a tougher stance on Riyadh.
Germany is one of the top four or five arms exporters in the world after the United States, Russia and France. But politically defending the country because of its military past and until World War II, a peaceful approach.
