Germany allows the reception of four children of children of militants in Syria

UNITED STATES, WASHINGTON (VOP TODAY NEWS) — Germany has for the first time allowed children suspected of belonging to the Islamic State group to return from northern Syria, and Foreign Minister Heiko Maas said the government would work to bring more such children.

Germany, like other Western countries, faces a tough decision on how to deal with its citizens who have gone to the Middle East to join groups like the Islamic State.

German media reported that three of the four German children were orphans, without giving further details.

“We will seek more children to leave Syria,” Mas said on Monday. “Most of these are young children … they cannot be held responsible for their parents’ actions, and we want to help with something.”

Kurdish-led authorities in northern Syria are holding thousands of Islamic State members, including foreigners, women and children.

German intelligence officials say more than 1,000 Germans have gone to fight in Syria and Iraq, where ISIS once controlled large swathes of territory.

About a third have returned to Germany, and a third are believed to have died and the rest are still in Syria and Iraq.

Other Western countries, including Britain and France, face the dilemma of making decisions about how to deal with their citizens who have joined the Islamic State.

The British government came under fire after it decided to strip a 19-year-old woman of her nationality in February, leaving her in a refugee camp in Syria where her baby died.
