GERMANY (VOP TODAY NEWS) — The German Federal Chancellor said she was in favor of Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer idea, presented as a potential successor, of building a European aircraft carrier.

The idea of a future European aircraft carrier, launched by the new leader of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer, has received the support of Angela Merkel.

“I think it’s good and fair that we can have such equipment on the European side,” Merkel told a press conference, adding that “other things” were a priority.

In a tribune setting out her European vision and released on Sunday, Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer called for the construction of a European aircraft carrier to “support the role of the European Union as a security force and peace.” Only five European countries now have aircraft carriers: Great Britain, Germany, France, Spain and Italy.

Currently, Germany, France and Spain are working on a new SCAF combat aircraft (“Fighter Plane System of the Future”). The system should be operational by 2040 and the future aircraft will be used to take over from the French Rafale, according to the Minister of Armies Florence Parly.
