UNITED STATES, WASHINGTON (VOP TODAY NEWS) — Two hundred third-party organizations worked on the social network. The project was implemented under the code name Prism.
Hundreds of contractors have been decoding voice messages for Facebook, Bloomberg reports. Employees of these companies told the agency that the project, called the code word “Prism,” involved listening and decrypting voice messages, dialogs, including obscene content. Moreover, the purpose of the project Facebook did not disclose. The contractors themselves did not know where the records were made and how they were received.
According to Bloomberg, among the contractors involved in decryption was TaskUs Inc. The social network is the largest of its customers, but company employees cannot be publicly informed about who they work for.
Social network users were not aware that this data was passed on to third parties, and some of the Facebook partners considered such activity unethical.
It is worth noting that the decryption of voice messages concerned users of Facebook Messenger, who independently chose the option to decrypt voice messages.
Facebook admitted that they were engaged in decoding audio messages of users, noting that from now on they will not do this. According to the company, the decryption stopped simultaneously with Apple and Google more than a week ago.
The social networks explained that the contractors were involved in verifying the work of artificial intelligence on Facebook and how it interpreted anonymous messages.
