UNITED STATES (VOP TODAY NEWS) — A patient with breast cancer recognized as incurable, went into remission after having tested innovative immunotherapy 2.5 years ago.

The same therapy helped two more patients: with liver cancer and colorectal cancer. All three people were treated by a team of the National Institute of Oncology (National Cancer Institute, USA), headed by Stephen Rosenberg.

The therapy was as follows: for each patient, the scientists sequenced the complete genome of the tumors to identify mutations, and then tested the immune cells isolated from the tumors to find those that could identify the defects.

These cells were then propagated in the laboratory, and the billions of cells produced were injected back to attack the tumors.

Previous cure cases have been described in the scientific literature in 2014 and 2016. The current patient, an article about the case of which was posted in the journal Nature Medicine on Monday, 52 years old, and since 2003, she has fought against cancer. 15 years ago, she underwent a mastectomy operation due to breast cancer, but 10 years later, metastases were found, against which nothing helped.

In 2015, she became a participant in the study of the National Institute of Oncology. In one of her tumors (remotely surgically), experts counted 62 different mutations.. Among the immune cells of the woman were found those that could fight with four defects.

Having increased the number of extracted immune cells in the laboratory to tens of millions, the scientists returned them back to the patient’s body, which had previously undergone chemotherapy. Five months later, the cancer disappeared.

Stephen Rosenberg emphasized that the treatment, called adaptive cell therapy, is experimental and has not helped some other patients. However, it still worked in three cases, and it gives hope that the technique can be useful in the treatment of malignant tumors in the later stages.
