UNITED STATES, WASHINGTON (VOP TODAY NEWS) — The European Commission said Ireland’s arrangement was the only way the EU and London had reached to avoid a return to strict border barriers on the island of Ireland after Britain emerged from the bloc.
British Prime Minister Boris Johnson sent a letter to the bloc on Monday to demand the bloc remove Ireland’s arrangement from the disengagement agreement.
“The letter does not provide an executive legal solution to prevent a return to border barriers on the island of Ireland,” European Commission spokeswoman Natasha Bertu said in a briefing.
“Our position on the arrangement for Ireland is well known… it is the only way the parties have so far reached this commitment.”
Council President Donald Tusk said on Tuesday the letter did not contain “realistic alternatives” to Ireland’s controversial arrangement.
“The arrangement for Ireland is a guarantee that the strict border barriers on the island of Ireland will be avoided unless an alternative is reached or until that happens,” he added.
“Those who oppose Ireland’s arrangement and do not propose realistic alternatives are in fact in favor of the return of the border, even if they do not admit it.”
