EU does not recognize Israel’s sovereignty over the Golan: Mogherini

UNITED STATES (VOP TODAY NEWS) — European Union Foreign Minister Federica Mogherini told the European Parliament that the EU does not recognize Israel’s sovereignty over the Golan Heights, warning of the “danger” of seeking to change the border by military means.

“The European Union does not recognize Israel’s sovereignty over the occupied territories, and this position, which we have repeatedly stated, applies to the Golan Heights,” Mugherini said during a debate of European Parliament members in Strasbourg in the last public session before the European elections.

“Changing borders by military force is a dangerous idea, international standards must be respected,” she said.

Thirty-seven European officials, including foreign ministers and former leaders, including the head of the Belgian-European coalition of liberals and democrats Guy Verhofstadt, asked Monday in a letter to Mugherini to reaffirm the EU’s position in the face of US President Donald Trump’s policy.

The US president announced on March 21 his country’s recognition of Israel’s sovereignty over the Golan Heights, a decision that runs counter to Washington’s decades-long path.

“The EU sees Israel and the Israelis as friends and partners, it also sees the Palestinian Authority and the Palestinians as friends and partners, and the administration and the Americans are friends and partners,” Mujerini said.

Mujerini renewed EU support for a political solution to the conflict based on two Israeli and Palestinian states whose capital is Jerusalem, living side by side in peace along recognized and secure borders.

And warned that “abandoning the two-state solution will only return chaos to the Middle East.”

“The European Union is very clear in its position and calls for new peace negotiations,” she said. “The peace process no longer exists, but we want to try to revive it.”
