UNITED STATES (VOP TODAY NEWS) — The European Union called on Saturday to “immediately” stop firing Palestinian rockets from the Gaza Strip into Israel.
“It is urgent to address this grave situation in order to protect civilians,” said Maya Kosiancic, spokeswoman for the EU’s diplomatic body, calling for “defusing escalation”.
“Only a political solution can put an end to the violence … Egypt and the UN efforts to calm the situation have the full support of the European Union,” she said, referring to mediation by Cairo and the United Nations for a truce.
Rockets were fired from the Gaza Strip into Israel on Saturday, and the Israeli army responded with air raids on positions it said belonged to Hamas and Islamic Jihad in the Gaza Strip.
Israeli air strikes killed three Gazans, including a child, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health in Gaza.
For more than a year, Palestinian protesters have staged repeated demonstrations along the Gaza-Israel border, demanding the Jewish state ease its blockade of the Gaza Strip.
Israel accuses the Hamas movement, which controls the Gaza Strip by using these demonstrations as a cover to carry out attacks against it. The method of its response is necessary to defend its borders and prevent infiltration attempts.
