UNITED STATES (VOP TODAY NEWS) — The European Council agreed to a further extension of the Brexit term in order to allow ratification of the agreement on British withdrawal from the EU, according to the resolution of the extraordinary EU summit of April 10.

“The European Union of 27 states and the United Kingdom agreed to a flexible extension until October 31. This means an additional six months for the UK to find the best possible solution,” Tusk wrote on his twitter.

“This extension should last as long as necessary, and, in any case, no further than October 31, 2019,” said a document circulated in Brussels on Thursday night.

It also notes that, in accordance with Article 50 of the EU Treaty, the withdrawal agreement may enter into force even earlier if the parties complete the relevant ratification procedures before October 31, 2019.

Consequently, exit from the EU should take place on the first day of the month following the completion of the ratification procedures, or on November 1, 2019, whichever comes first, is explained in the summit’s ruling.

The document stresses the inadmissibility of “that this further extension violated the normal functioning of the union and its institutions.” In addition, the United Kingdom “will remain a Member State until a new exit date (from EU – ed.) with full rights and obligations under Article 50”.

The decree provides that “the United Kingdom has the right to withdraw its notice (of withdrawal from the EU – ed.) at any time.”

If the UK continues to be a member state for the European elections of May 23-26, 2019 and if it does not ratify the agreement on withdrawal before May 22, 2019, it will be obliged to hold elections to the European Parliament in accordance with EU legislation, the document says .

“If in the United Kingdom these elections do not take place, the extension should be terminated on May 31, 2019,” the resolution says.

The decision comes into force on the day of its adoption, the European Council says.
