Erdogan on isolated mayors: served the terrorists, not the people

UNITED STATES, WASHINGTON (VOP TODAY NEWS) — Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has defended the decision to isolate three mayors from the pro-Kurdish Democratic Left Peoples Party.

Erdogan said in a statement on Friday that the three mayors “were serving terrorists instead of serving the people.”

The Turkish authorities have sacked the mayors of the cities of Diyarbakir, Mardin and Van, and charged them with “terrorism”. Other officials have been appointed to perform the functions of isolated mayors.

The decision to sack the presidents sparked protests in Turkey’s mainly Kurdish southeast.
