At least eight people were killed and dozens wounded in a fire and stampede at a local entertainment association in the northern Spanish town of Vila Nova da Reina on Saturday night, officials said.

More than 60 people were in the two-story building 260 km (260 miles) northeast of Lisbon when the fire broke out, Mayor Jose Antonio de Jesus said in televised remarks.

He did not say the cause of the fire but local media said a water heater explosion was probably the cause.
