UNITED STATES (VOP TODAY NEWS) — Police killed eight “terrorist elements” in a clash with the city of Arish, the capital of the northern Sinai province, where militants loyal to the Islamic state are active, the Interior Ministry said on Friday.
The army says hundreds of militants have been killed since the campaign began.
The ministry said in a statement that the clash occurred in the south of El Arish where a police checkpoint was attacked on Wednesday, killing eight policemen, including an officer.
“Information was available about the hiding of a group of terrorist elements in an olive grove in the desert ditch in Al-Obour area south of Al-Arish and during their siege, they fired heavily at the forces,” the statement said.
The statement added that the clash “resulted in the death of eight terrorist elements.” He said police found five automatic rifles, an explosive device and two suicide belts.
The statement said that the operation was carried out within the framework of “pursuing and tracking terrorist elements involved in attacking a security ambush south of El Arish” dawn of the fifth of June.
The Islamic State Organization claimed responsibility for the attack on the day it occurred. He also said in an online bulletin on Thursday evening that 15 security forces were killed and 10 wounded. Reuters could not verify the allegations.
The Interior Ministry said in a statement on Wednesday night that police had killed 14 militants in pursuit of fleeing militants after the attack.
The army and police launched a major crackdown on militants in February last year following an attack on a mosque in northern Sinai in November 2017 that killed hundreds of worshipers.
