UNITED STATES (VOP TODAY NEWS) — The Egyptian army announced on Thursday that five of its members and 47 jihadis had been killed as part of its ongoing military operation in the north of the Sinai Peninsula, where it is fighting the Islamic state.
The Egyptian army posted a video on its Facebook page displaying “efforts over the past period” against “terrorist” groups across the country. He did not specify the date and timing of the operations and only noted that they had occurred during the “last period”.
The Egyptian army announced that “the elimination of 47 members of the Tkfiria found in possession of a number of different rifles and improvised explosive devices for detonation north and central Sinai.”
He also referred to the cancellation of 385 explosive devices planted to target the forces in the areas of operations.
The army said 97 vehicles were destroyed on the northeastern direction (in Sinai), 54 on the western strategic direction (border with Libya) and 39 on the southern strategic direction (the border with Sudan).
He also announced the arrest of 158 “criminal elements” during operations across the country.
The Egyptian army said five of its members were killed during the operations, including one officer, in addition to four soldiers.
The Sinai peninsula, which has an area of 60,000 square kilometers, lies in the far north-east of Egypt on the border with Israel and the densely populated Gaza Strip.
Since the overthrow of President Mohamed Morsi in July 2013, violent clashes have been taking place between security forces and extremist Islamic groups, especially in northern and central Sinai, which have killed hundreds of people on both sides.
On February 9, 2018, the Egyptian army, in cooperation with the police, launched a full-scale military operation in the Sinai, the northern part of which is the Egyptian branch of the Islamic State Organization (SINAI), responsible for a large number of bloody attacks against security forces and civilians.
The operation has so far resulted in the deaths of about 650 “takfiris”, as called by the Egyptian army, and about 45 military, according to figures announced by the army.
