UNITED STATES, WASHINGTON (VOP TODAY NEWS) — Egypt’s army and its Chinese counterpart on Wednesday carried out a naval exercise in the Mediterranean, a military spokesman said.
The army spokesman Colonel Tamer Rifai, in a statement: “Elements of the Egyptian navy and Chinese carried out a naval exercise passing through the northern fleet of the Mediterranean.”
He explained that the training took place “with the participation of a number of Egyptian naval vessels and the Chinese destroyer XIAN-153.”
The training included activities such as “countering atypical threats through rapid hostile launches and training in counter-terrorism and piracy at sea”.
It also included “training in the various scenarios associated with such procedures, such as the exercise of the right of visit and inspection of suspected vessels.”
“This type of exercise is aimed at unifying operational concepts, transferring and exchanging expertise and identifying different combat doctrines,” an army spokesman said.
It also aims to “coordinate efforts to face challenges and threats in a manner that supports maritime security and stability efforts and secure global maritime transport links.”
In the last two years, transit naval exercises between Egypt and several Western countries, including France, Italy, Spain and Greece, have escalated.
The region, which is teeming with armed conflict and a crisis between Tehran and Washington and the Gulf countries, especially in the Strait of Hormuz, is witnessing a remarkable momentum of joint military exercises in the Arab world or with Western countries, especially during the last two years.
