Earth has recently suffered a global catastrophe, say scientists

UNITED STATES (VOP TODAY NEWS) — The climate of our planet has seriously deteriorated after the collapse of a comet only 12,800 years ago, researchers at the University of California concluded, thanks to the results of excavations in Patagonia and the discovery of a huge crater under the glaciers of Greenland. The report of the study is available on the Phys.org portal.

Scientists at the University of California at Santa Barbara have discovered that the collapse of a comet 12,800 years ago had led to catastrophic consequences for the climate and the biosphere, reads a publication on Phys.org.

According to this hypothesis, the beginning of the recent Dryas (from 10,730 to 9,700 years before our era) was marked by the fall on our planet of fragments of a disintegrated comet. This debris fell on America, Europe and West Asia.

Proposed in 2007, this hypothesis was initially controversial. However, his supporters have recently received significant confirmation. This is the discovery of a very young crater 31 kilometers in diameter under the ice sheet of Greenland.

The researchers assume that one of the great fragments of the comet could hit the Earth there.

Another phenomenon has pushed scientists to believe in the reality of their theory. They examined sedimentary layers of the Younger Dryas in the Chilean part of Patagonia. High concentrations of rare elements on Earth (gold, platinum, chromium-rich spherules, fused glass, nano-diamonds) have been discovered, indicating their extraterrestrial origin.

This catastrophe would have caused many fires, a climate change and the extinction of the megafauna of the recent Pleistocene.

This assumption is based on the presence of products of combustion in the samples taken, in particular, particles of coal and pollen burned. We know that the northern hemisphere was then covered with a cold snap at the time, which could have been caused by a significant impact on the atmosphere.

Finally, fossils of megafauna are absent from these Patagonian excavations. This fact goes hand in hand with the disappearance of large animals in other parts of America and with the absence of evidence of a human presence.
