Dozens of dead in Chadian army battles and Boko Haram elements

UNITED STATES (VOP TODAY NEWS) — Dozens of people, including seven Chadian soldiers and 63 “terrorists”, were killed in clashes sparked by an attack by members of the Boko Haram group Sunday night on a military base, a Chadian army spokesman said Monday.

“Seven terrorists were killed and 15 wounded when the terrorists attacked our forces at midnight in Pohama (…) in the Lake Chad region,” Colonel Azem Bermandwa told AFP.

“Sixty-three terrorists have been killed,” he said, adding that he continued to search for other attackers.

He pointed out that the Defense Minister of Chad Daoud Yaya Ibrahim and army chief of staff Tahir Irrada, heading to the scene of the battles Monday to “assess the situation.”

Last month, 23 soldiers were killed in the Lake Chad region in the bloodiest attack against the Chadian army by the Boko Haram group, which launched a rebellion in Nigeria a decade ago.

The unrest has spread to Niger and Chad in the context of the Boko Haram rebellion, which has killed more than 27,000 people and driven more than 1.7 million displaced.

Cameroon, Chad, Niger and Nigeria formed a multinational force to fight Boko Haram.

Since June last year, Boko Haram has launched at least seven attacks in Chad.
