UNITED STATES (VOP TODAY NEWS) — Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh said Tuesday that direct and unprecedented talks between leaders of Palestinian detainees in Israeli jails and the UN envoy led to an agreement with the prison administration and the suspension of hunger strikes.
“We have opened a direct line between UN envoy Nikolay Mladenov and the leadership of the prisoners inside the prisons and we have had a direct conversation between Hamas leader Abbas al-Sayyid, and this is the first time,” Haniyeh said.
Haniyeh made the remarks during a meeting held by Hamas deputies in the dissolved Legislative Council and attended by deputies of the faction of the leader of the Fatah movement, Mohammed Dahlan, to solidarity with the Palestinian prisoners on the eve of the revival of “Palestinian Prisoners’ Day.”
Haniyeh said the prisoners’ strike “was attributed to the resistance’s fire on the ground and to the position of the brothers in Egypt.”
“The brothers inside the prisons had a decision that they would turn the table with all the meaning of the word if that situation continues.”
Haniyeh stressed that the victory of the prisoners will be a “positive shadow” on the understandings in Gaza, and that the issue of prisoners was within the timetable for understandings.
The Palestinian prisoners’ club announced on Monday evening that Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails had suspended their hunger strike after reaching an agreement with the Israeli prison administration “to meet a range of their demands for life.”
More than 400 Palestinian prisoners began an open hunger strike last week, calling it the “Karama 2 strike” to protest the recent sanctions imposed by the detention department.
